About Gunderbooka
Gunderbooka is an extremely remote outback locality in far north-western New South Wales, situated approximately 60 kilometres south of Bourke in the Bourke Shire local government area. With a recorded population of just 27 residents scattered across an enormous 2,801 square kilometre area, it is one of the most sparsely populated localities in New South Wales, encompassing vast pastoral sheep and cattle stations on the semi-arid plains of the Darling Riverine region. The locality includes the Gundabooka National Park, a significant protected area preserving mulga scrubland, dramatic gorges, and Aboriginal cultural heritage.
Life in Gunderbooka revolves around pastoral station work, with residents employed in wool and cattle production on large outback properties. The area offers extraordinary outback experiences including rugged gorge landscapes, ancient Aboriginal rock engravings at Gundabooka National Park, and outstanding night skies under some of Australia's darkest and most pristine conditions. All services — including fuel, groceries, medical, and schooling — are accessed in Bourke, the regional centre of far north-western New South Wales, approximately 60 kilometres to the north.
Gunderbooka falls under postcode 2840 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Barwon electorate.
