About Louth
Louth is a tiny outback village on the Darling River in far western New South Wales, located 107 kilometres southwest of Bourke and approximately 800 kilometres northwest of Sydney. With a population of 74 at the 2021 census across an enormous 6,528 square kilometres — one of the largest localities in NSW — it is a quintessential outback settlement. The village sits on the banks of the Darling River (Barka) and has been an important river crossing and pastoral centre since the 1850s.
Louth is famous for its annual Louth Races, a two-day outback horse racing carnival that draws thousands of visitors to this remote village every August. The village features the historic Shindy's Inn pub (est. 1859), one of the oldest in outback NSW, and the Darling River provides fishing, camping, and canoe access. Louth attracts outback enthusiasts, pastoralists, and tourists exploring the Darling River run. It offers a genuine slice of remote Australian outback life.
Louth falls under postcode 2840 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Barwon electorate.
