About Gunnawarra
Gunnawarra is a vast and sparsely populated rural locality in the Tablelands Region of Queensland, located approximately 205 kilometres south-west of Cairns and 43.7 kilometres south of Mount Garnet. The locality covers an enormous 956 square kilometres of tropical hinterland and recorded a population of just 27 residents in the 2021 Census. Gunnawarra is centred on the historic Gunnawarra Homestead, a pastoral station that has operated in the region since the nineteenth century.
The landscape of Gunnawarra is defined by tropical savanna woodland and the rugged ranges of the Atherton Tablelands hinterland, with Innot Hot Springs — a natural geothermal attraction — located nearby. The locality is deeply rural, with no public transport and all services accessed from surrounding townships such as Mount Garnet or Ravenshoe. Gunnawarra Station has historically supported cattle grazing across its extensive pastoral lease, and the area attracts some visitors exploring the remote Tablelands backcountry.
Gunnawarra falls under postcode 4872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hill electorate.
