About Hackney
Hackney is a compact inner-eastern suburb of Adelaide, located within the City of Norwood Payneham St Peters, directly adjacent to the Adelaide Park Lands and city centre. Covering just 0.5 square kilometres, the suburb is one of Adelaide's smallest and most densely focused localities, with a 2021 Census population of 575. Its boundaries are defined by the River Torrens to the north, Hackney Road (part of the City Ring Route) to the west, and the continuation of North Terrace to the south.
Hackney is overwhelmingly dominated by St Peter's College, one of South Australia's most prestigious independent boys' schools, whose 75-acre campus occupies around 60 per cent of the suburb's entire area. The school grounds include three heritage-listed buildings dating to the mid-1800s. Across Hackney Road, residents have immediate access to the Adelaide Botanic Garden, Botanic Park, and the National Wine Centre of Australia. The O-Bahn Busway runs along Hackney Road, providing fast bus access to the CBD and Tea Tree Gully, making the suburb extremely well-connected for its inner-city location.
Hackney falls under postcode 5069 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Dunstan electorate.
