About Halls Gap
Halls Gap is a small tourist town in western Victoria, situated at the foot of the Grampians (Gariwerd) mountain range approximately 253 kilometres north-west of Melbourne CBD, within the Shire of Northern Grampians. Set in the Fyans Valley between the Wonderland and Mount William ranges, the town serves as the main gateway to Grampians National Park — one of Victoria's most popular national parks. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 495 permanent residents, though the town hosts many times that number in visitors throughout the year.
Halls Gap is renowned as a base for bushwalking, rock climbing, wildlife spotting, and scenic drives through the Grampians, with kangaroos and emus a common sight along the town's streets. The town centre offers a range of cafes, restaurants, galleries, and visitor accommodation catering to a significant tourist trade. The region is also known for its Aboriginal rock art sites maintained by the Djab Wurrung and Jardwadjali Traditional Owners, spring wildflower season, and the annual Grampians Jazz Festival. Ararat and Stawell are the nearest larger service centres, each around 45 minutes away.
Halls Gap falls under postcode 3381 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lowan (Western Victoria) electorate.
