About Howitt
Howitt is a vast and sparsely populated coastal locality in Queensland's Gulf Country, situated in the Shire of Carpentaria about 30 kilometres north-north-east of Normanton and 40 kilometres east of Karumba. Covering an enormous 8,626 square kilometres of remote Gulf savanna country, the locality borders the Gulf of Carpentaria to the north and is characterised by flat floodplains, tropical wetlands, and seasonal watercourses that swell dramatically during the wet season. With only 48 residents recorded in the 2021 Census, Howitt is one of Australia's most remote and thinly inhabited localities.
Life in Howitt is defined by the rhythms of the tropical wet and dry seasons, with pastoral station work forming the backbone of the local economy. The Gulf Country surrounding Howitt is renowned as one of Australia's premier barramundi fishing destinations, drawing anglers from across the country each dry season (April–October). The nearby towns of Normanton and Karumba provide essential supplies, fuel, and services, while the broader region offers access to Karumba's famous sunset views over the Gulf, fishing charters, and the celebrated Gulflander train between Normanton and Croydon.
Howitt falls under postcode 4890 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
