About Jeparit
Jeparit is a small town on the Wimmera River in north-western Victoria, located approximately 370 kilometres north-west of Melbourne within the Hindmarsh Shire local government area. With a 2021 Census population of 476, the town is the principal settlement of a vast locality spanning around 716 square kilometres of Wimmera wheat belt and grazing country. Jeparit holds an important place in Australian history as the birthplace of Sir Robert Menzies, Australia's longest-serving Prime Minister and founder of the Liberal Party of Australia.
Visitors to Jeparit can see the Menzies memorial spire in the town square, erected by the local community in his honour. The town's main street (Roy Street) features essential local services, and the Jeparit Golf Club and Southern Mallee Thunder football and netball club help sustain community life. Nearby Lake Hindmarsh, the largest freshwater lake in Victoria when full, provides a natural focal point for the district. Most residents travel to Horsham (73 kilometres south) for a fuller range of shopping, healthcare, and schooling, while the Wimmera landscape offers wide-open skies and a peaceful way of life characteristic of regional Victoria.
Jeparit falls under postcode 3423 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lowan (Western Victoria) electorate.
