About Jilkminggan
Jilkminggan — also known as Djembere or Duck Creek — is a small remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory, located approximately 146 kilometres south-east of Katherine in the Roper Gulf region. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 263 residents living across a compact 6 square kilometre community area. Sitting within the Roper Gulf local government area, the community is situated on traditional Mangarrayi country along a pastoral landscape shaped by centuries of Indigenous connection to land and water.
Jilkminggan is home to a primary school and a health clinic — established among the first community infrastructure built following government land rights reforms — with children historically travelling to and from the nearby Elsey Station for schooling before these facilities were developed. Social housing makes up a significant proportion of dwellings, and the community relies on Katherine for major retail, medical, and administrative services. The area's remote character, with no sealed road access and limited connectivity, reflects the challenges and resilience of life in one of Australia's most isolated communities.
Jilkminggan falls under postcode 852 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Katherine electorate.
