About Kalunga
Kalunga is a small rural locality in the Tablelands Region of Far North Queensland, situated on the Atherton Tablelands at an elevation of around 700 metres above sea level. With just over 100 residents in the 2021 census, it is a sparsely populated farming community where the Great Dividing Range forms the northern boundary and the Wild River runs along the eastern edge. The locality sits roughly 20 kilometres south-west of Ravenshoe, the highest town in Queensland.
The area is characterised by cattle grazing, dairy farming and the lush tropical highland scenery typical of the Atherton Tablelands. Residents rely on the nearby township of Ravenshoe for everyday services, schools and the Ravenshoe Pharmacy and community health facilities. The Tablelands lifestyle appeals to those seeking rural tranquillity, with national parks, rainforest walks and the Millstream Falls — the widest single-drop waterfall in Australia — accessible within the broader region.
Kalunga falls under postcode 4887 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hill electorate.
