About Moomin
Moomin is a small rural locality in the Tablelands Region of Far North Queensland, situated approximately 1.3 kilometres north-east of Herberton and 17 kilometres south-west of Atherton on the Atherton Tablelands. The locality covers nearly 31 square kilometres at elevations typical of the Tablelands plateau, and recorded a population of 191 at the 2021 Census. The Tablelands Region is administered by Tablelands Regional Council and is known for its cool highland climate, red volcanic soils, and productive agricultural sector.
Moomin sits within the agricultural hinterland surrounding Herberton, a historic mining town that grew during the silver–lead mining boom of the late 19th century. The surrounding Tablelands landscape features dairy and cattle farming, timber production, and market gardening. Atherton, the regional centre approximately 17 kilometres to the north-east, provides residents with access to schools, supermarkets, healthcare, and the Atherton–Herberton Road corridor connecting the locality to Cairns approximately 93 kilometres north.
