About Kaniva
Kaniva is a small country town in the Shire of West Wimmera, Victoria, located on the Western Highway approximately 413 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 25 kilometres from the South Australian border. Serving as a regional service centre for the surrounding wheat and sheep farming district, Kaniva is also a well-known rest stop for travellers making the long drive between Melbourne and Adelaide. The town sits at the edge of Little Desert National Park to the south, giving residents ready access to one of Victoria's most distinctive natural reserves.
Kaniva has a strong community spirit, best illustrated by the formation of the Kaniva Community Co-operative, which purchased and now operates the local fuel station — known affectionately as Wimpy — after it was threatened with closure. The town celebrates its agricultural heritage through distinctive sheep art sculptures along the main street, painted by local community groups. Basic services including a supermarket, schools, and medical facilities are available in town, making Kaniva largely self-sufficient for day-to-day needs, though Horsham (about 113 kilometres to the south-east) provides more comprehensive services for major shopping and specialist healthcare.
Kaniva falls under postcode 3419 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lowan (Western Victoria) electorate.
