About Serviceton
Serviceton is a small country town in the Shire of West Wimmera in rural western Victoria, located near the Victorian–South Australian border approximately 437 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 294 kilometres from Adelaide. The locality covers a very large area of nearly 430 square kilometres of flat, arid Mallee country at the edge of the two states. With around 129 people recorded in the 2021 Census, Serviceton is one of the more remote inhabited localities in Victoria, established in 1887 when the inter-colonial Melbourne–Adelaide railway was completed.
Serviceton was named after James Service, a former Premier of Victoria, and its original purpose was as a changeover point for locomotive crews and engines on the Melbourne–Adelaide rail corridor. The town retains this historic railway significance and was immortalised in the Tom Waits song "Town With No Cheer" from the 1983 album Swordfishtrombones. The Serviceton Golf Club provides recreation for locals and passing travellers on the Western Highway. The nearest substantial towns are Horsham (139 kilometres east) and Keith in South Australia to the west, making this a genuinely remote outpost for those who appreciate wide Mallee plains and Australian railway history.
Serviceton falls under postcode 3420 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lowan (Western Victoria) electorate.
