About Karlgarin
Karlgarin is a small rural locality in the eastern Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, situated approximately 321 kilometres south-east of Perth and around 45 kilometres east of the Shire of Kondinin’s administrative centre, Kondinin. The locality falls within the Shire of Kondinin and had a population of 105 at the 2021 Census, spread across a vast area of approximately 1,051 square kilometres. Settlement in the district dates to the early twentieth century as part of the soldier settlement scheme, with the townsite gazetted in 1931. The name Karlgarin is derived from the Noongar word ‘karl’, meaning fire.
The surrounding landscape is characterised by fertile agricultural plains, granite outcrops, woodlands, and seasonal salt lakes typical of the eastern Wheatbelt. Grain and sheep farming are the primary economic activities, with wheat and cereal crops forming the backbone of the local economy. Karlgarin shares a community football club and other sporting teams with neighbouring Hyden, fostering a close-knit rural community spirit. The area sits within the Pathways to Wave Rock tourism corridor, with the iconic Wave Rock near Hyden a popular attraction for visitors travelling through the region.
