About Karragarra Island
Karragarra Island is one of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands situated off the coast of South East Queensland, approximately 45 kilometres south-east of Brisbane CBD within the City of Redland local government area. Covering just over 2 square kilometres, it is the smallest of the inhabited Southern Moreton Bay Islands, recording a population of 240 at the 2021 Census. The island is accessible only by water taxi from Redland Bay, lending it a secluded, off-grid character that attracts those seeking a quieter way of life.
Karragarra Island has no shops or commercial services — a feature its tight-knit community actively values — and daily supplies must be sourced from larger neighbouring islands such as Russell or Macleay. Visitors and residents enjoy a white sandy beach with a swimming enclosure, free electric BBQs, shaded picnic tables, a playground, and access to foreshore parkland. The island attracts sea-changers, nature-lovers, and weekenders drawn to its peaceful foreshore, slower pace, and beautiful Moreton Bay surroundings.
Karragarra Island falls under postcode 4184 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Redlands electorate.
