About Kettering
Kettering is a small coastal town on the shores of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel in southern Tasmania, approximately 32 kilometres south of Hobart within the Municipality of Kingborough. With a population of 943 at the 2021 census, it is one of the more characterful small towns in the greater Hobart metropolitan area, widely known as the departure point for the Bruny Island Ferry. The town sits on a sheltered waterway, protected by Bruny Island, and has a strong maritime identity with two major marinas — South Haven Marina and Oyster Cove Marina — hosting an estimated 400 boats.
Kettering is beloved by boating enthusiasts, artists, and those seeking a peaceful rural lifestyle within commuting distance of Hobart. The area has a long association with orcharding — particularly apples, cherries, and pears — as well as marine industries and rural properties. The town has developed a quiet reputation as an artistic community, and the scenic waterfront, historic Oyster Cove area, and surrounding bushland make it popular with visitors heading to or from Bruny Island. For residents, the Kingston shopping precinct, roughly 20 kilometres to the north, provides the nearest major retail and service hub.
Kettering falls under postcode 7155 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Franklin (Huon) electorate.
