About Kianga
Kianga is a rural locality in the Banana Shire, Central Queensland, situated adjacent to the town of Moura approximately 155 kilometres south-west of Rockhampton. Covering over 423 square kilometres, the locality has a population of approximately 219 residents and is closely associated with the Bowen Basin coal industry that defines much of the region's economy. The median household income is above the Queensland average, reflecting the relatively high wages common in resource-sector communities in Central Queensland.
Kianga takes its name from an Aboriginal word meaning home and was formally identified as a locality following the establishment of the Kianga railway station in 1937. The area is historically significant as the site of the 1975 Kianga No. 1 mine disaster, in which 13 miners lost their lives. Today, the locality neighbours Moura, which provides all essential services including schools, shops, and medical facilities, while the broader Dawson Valley region is known for its coking coal export operations, grazing properties, and the Dawson River landscape.
Kianga falls under postcode 4718 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gregory electorate.
