About Cracow
Cracow is a historic rural town and locality in Queensland's Shire of Banana, situated approximately 494 kilometres north-west of Brisbane and 270 kilometres south of Rockhampton. Established in 1931 during a gold rush that attracted prospectors to the region, Cracow retains its heritage character and remains one of the most historically significant small settlements in central Queensland. With a population of 114 residents spread across nearly 700 square kilometres, it is a remote community defined by its gold mining past and surrounding pastoral lands.
Cracow's gold mining heritage is its defining feature, and the town's historic streetscapes and wide rural surrounds reflect its origins as a boom-era settlement. The nearby town of Theodore, approximately 50 kilometres to the north, provides access to additional services including schools, medical facilities, and shops. For those drawn to a deeply remote Queensland lifestyle rich in history, open space, and the spirit of the outback, Cracow offers a genuinely unique and characterful place to live.
Cracow falls under postcode 4719 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Callide electorate.
