About Theodore
Theodore is a small rural town and locality in Queensland's Banana Shire, situated on the banks of the Dawson River approximately 565 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. The town was established in the 1920s as part of Premier Ted Theodore's ambitious Dawson River Irrigation Scheme, giving it a planned character distinct from many outback settlements. With a population of 451 as at the 2021 Census, Theodore serves as a service centre for the surrounding Callide Valley agricultural region.
Theodore offers a range of local services including a hospital, primary school, hotel, and basic retail, providing a self-contained community for surrounding cattle and farming properties. The town sits 106 kilometres south-west of Biloela and is serviced by the Leichhardt Highway, making it a stopping point for travellers heading to outback Queensland. Fishing and swimming in the Dawson River, the nearby Isla Gorge National Park, and a strong local rodeo culture define the lifestyle and community spirit of Theodore.
Theodore falls under postcode 4719 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Callide electorate.
