About Kinchant Dam
Kinchant Dam is a rural locality in the Mackay Region of Queensland, situated approximately 41 kilometres west of Mackay on the edge of the cane-growing Proserpine-Mackay hinterland, within Mackay Regional Council. With a population of around 183 residents across 37 square kilometres, the locality takes its name from the Kinchant Dam — a water storage facility built on Sandy Creek that forms Lake Kinchant, a popular recreational destination for the Mackay region. The area is characterised by quiet rural acreage properties and the scenic surroundings of the lake.
Lake Kinchant is the centrepiece of the locality, offering barbecue facilities, a park area overlooking the dam, and opportunities for boating, fishing, and picnicking — making it a popular day trip and weekend escape from Mackay. The drive to the dam passes through the striking sugar cane fields of North Eton, providing a classic slice of Mackay region country. Mackay itself provides all major retail, health, education, and transport services within an easy 40-minute drive.
Kinchant Dam falls under postcode 4741 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Whitsunday electorate.
