About Kirup
Kirup is a small rural locality in Western Australia's South West region, situated on the South Western Highway between Donnybrook and Balingup in the upper reaches of the Capel River valley, approximately 228 kilometres south of Perth. It is one of three main town sites within the Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup, covering around 69 square kilometres of farmland, bushland, and forest. With a population of 156 residents at the 2021 Census, Kirup retains a deeply rural character shaped by its pastoral and timber heritage dating back to the 1870s.
Kirup is perhaps best known for the historic Kirup Tavern and its legendary Kirup Syrup — a distinctive local red wine blend that has earned near-mythical status throughout the South West. The area supports organic farming and fresh produce, and the nearby Balingup township provides a small cluster of boutique shops and services. For broader amenities, residents travel to Donnybrook (13 kilometres south) or Bunbury (around 70 kilometres north), while nature lovers enjoy exploring the trails and farmland of the Capel River valley.
Kirup falls under postcode 6251 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warren-Blackwood (South West) electorate.
