About Southampton
Southampton is a rural locality in the Shire of Donnybrook–Balingup, in the South West region of Western Australia, approximately 211 kilometres south-south-east of Perth. The locality covers around 126 square kilometres of undulating farmland and bushland, with the Blackwood River running through from its south-eastern corner to the north-west. With a 2021 Census population of 84 residents spread across 41 dwellings, Southampton is a sparsely settled agricultural district where grazing and farming define the landscape.
The nearest service centres are Balingup (around 15 kilometres to the east) and Donnybrook (roughly 35 kilometres to the north-west), where residents access shops, schools, and medical services. Southampton is home to three heritage-listed sites, including Ferndale — one of the earliest homesteads in the Balingup district, a single-storey mud brick and corrugated iron building dating to 1859. The locality sits on the traditional land of the Wardandi people of the Noongar nation, and its broad open vistas and river frontage make it typical of the quiet farming communities found throughout the southern Wheatbelt fringe.
Southampton falls under postcode 6253 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warren-Blackwood (South West) electorate.
