About Kongwak
Kongwak is a small rural town in Victoria's South Gippsland Shire, located approximately 131 kilometres south-east of Melbourne on the Korumburra to Wonthaggi Road. With a population of around 207 residents across a locality of just under 38 square kilometres, Kongwak sits in rolling agricultural land — much of it used for dairying — cleared by early settlers in the late 19th century. The town has a post office that dates to 1898 and shares its Australian Rules football team with the neighbouring coastal township of Inverloch in the Alberton Football League.
Kongwak is perhaps best known for its popular Sunday Market, held weekly and drawing visitors from across the region for collectables, vintage and retro items, plants, and books. The surrounding Gippsland landscape — characterised by green hills, dairy pastures, and a relaxed rural atmosphere — appeals to weekenders and those seeking a quieter lifestyle within a couple of hours of Melbourne. Wonthaggi, about 18 kilometres to the west, is the nearest significant town with supermarkets, schools, and services, while the Bass Coast beaches are within easy reach.
Kongwak falls under postcode 3951 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gippsland South (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
