About Outtrim
Outtrim is a small historic township in Victoria's South Gippsland Shire, located approximately 151 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, south of Korumburra off the Korumburra–Wonthaggi Road. With a population of 270 and covering around 46 square kilometres of gently rolling countryside, Outtrim sits within a rich pastoral and historical landscape. The township owes its name to Alfred Richard Outtrim, Victorian Minister of Mines, following the discovery of coal here in 1892 and the subsequent development of the Outtrim and Jumbunna coalfields.
The former coal mining landscape has long since given way to dairy farming and grazing, typical of South Gippsland's famously green and fertile hills. Day-to-day services are available in nearby Korumburra, approximately 10 kilometres to the north-west, which serves as the main regional hub for the area, while Leongatha provides additional services around 20 kilometres to the south. The locality appeals to those drawn to South Gippsland's unhurried rural lifestyle, and the broader region offers access to the Gippsland coast and Wilsons Promontory National Park.
Outtrim falls under postcode 3951 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gippsland South (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
