About Koonibba
Koonibba is a remote Aboriginal community on the western Eyre Peninsula of South Australia, located approximately 45 kilometres west of Ceduna in the state's far west. With a 2021 Census population of 140, it is a small but significant First Nations community — the former site of a Lutheran mission established in the early 1900s that operated for most of the 20th century. The community sits on Country belonging to the Wirangu people and today functions as an incorporated Aboriginal community with its own governance structures.
Koonibba Community Aboriginal Corporation manages essential services for residents, including housing and community programs. The 2021 Census revealed that over 80% of dwellings are social housing, reflecting the community's supported-living model. Residents access healthcare, education, and major retail services through Ceduna, approximately 45 km to the east along the Eyre Highway. The community has a strong cultural identity and connection to Wirangu Country, and has been working towards self-determination and economic development in recent decades.
Koonibba falls under postcode 5690 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Flinders electorate.
