About Thevenard
Thevenard is a small port town located on the far west of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, contiguous with the larger town of Ceduna and forming part of the District Council of Ceduna. With a population of 563 at the 2021 Census and a compact area of 1.7 square kilometres, Thevenard is one of South Australia's more remote coastal communities, situated approximately 800 kilometres north-west of Adelaide. The town's name derives from nearby Cape Thevenard, honouring French admiral Antoine-Jean-Marie Thévenard, and the locality has served as an important grain and gypsum export port since the 1920s.
Thevenard's working port is the centrepiece of the local economy, handling bulk grain and gypsum exports for the broader Eyre Peninsula region. Residents benefit from Ceduna's services immediately adjacent, including supermarkets, schools, health facilities, and the Ceduna Foreshore area. The locality has a relatively higher proportion of social housing compared to the state average, reflecting its role as an affordable working-class community. Thevenard's remote coastal setting offers access to the Great Australian Bight and Eyre Peninsula coastline, attracting fishing enthusiasts and travellers on the Eyre Highway.
Thevenard falls under postcode 5690 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Flinders electorate.
