About Lake Bennett
Lake Bennett is a small tropical locality in the Coomalie Shire of the Northern Territory, situated approximately 80 kilometres south of Darwin. The locality spans over 164 square kilometres of tropical woodland surrounding an artificial freshwater lake of the same name, which was created in 1980 following the construction of a dam on private property. According to the 2021 Census, Lake Bennett has a population of 129 residents across 45 dwellings, many of which serve as weekender retreats and holiday cabins.
Lake Bennett is a popular escape destination for Darwin residents, offering stand-up paddleboarding, swimming, barramundi fishing — the lake has been stocked with barramundi since 2004 — and bushwalking in a serene tropical setting. The Lake Bennett Wilderness Resort, originally developed in the 1990s and rebranded following new ownership in 2021, offers accommodation, dining, and outdoor experiences. Permanent residents enjoy a quiet, nature-immersed lifestyle on the fringe of Darwin's urban reach, though a car is essential and all major services require a drive to the city or nearby Batchelor.
Lake Bennett falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
