About Rum Jungle
Rum Jungle is a small rural locality in the Northern Territory, situated approximately 80 kilometres south of Darwin near the town of Batchelor. With a population of around 88 residents, it occupies a vast 137 square kilometre area on the Finniss River floodplain within the tropical Top End. The locality is historically significant as the site of Australia's first uranium mine, which operated from the early 1950s until 1971 and made a major contribution to Australia's early atomic energy program.
Life in Rum Jungle today is quiet and rural, characterised by the expansive tropical savanna landscape that defines the Top End's dry season. The area is flanked by the Batchelor township, which provides residents with access to essential services, the Coomalie Cultural Centre, and Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education. Nearby Litchfield National Park, one of the Territory's most visited natural attractions, offers spectacular waterfalls and swimming holes within easy reach. The legacy of uranium mining has shaped the land significantly, with an extensive government-funded remediation program having worked to rehabilitate the site since the late 1980s.
Rum Jungle falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
