About Lancelin
Lancelin is a small coastal fishing and tourist town located approximately 127 kilometres north of Perth along Indian Ocean Drive in the Shire of Gingin, Western Australia. With a 2021 Census population of 786 permanent residents across 311 dwellings, the town covers around 44 square kilometres of coastal terrain at the northern reach of the Turquoise Coast. Elevated just 6 metres above sea level, Lancelin is characterised by white sandy beaches, large coastal sand dunes, and the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, attracting a mix of fishing families, retirees, and holiday visitors — with the population swelling to around 2,500 during peak summer periods.
Lancelin is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly kitesurfers and windsurfers who flock to its consistent ocean winds, as well as sandboarders and four-wheel drive adventurers who explore the towering dunes behind the town. Lancelin Island Nature Reserve sits just 500 metres offshore and provides sanctuary for seabirds, lizards, and sea lions. The town holds an annual colour blast event on the beach each March. While Lancelin has basic local shops and services, residents and visitors rely on the trip back to Perth or nearby towns for larger needs. Coastal erosion has become an increasing concern in recent years, with significant sand loss along the townsite shoreline since 2020.
Lancelin falls under postcode 6044 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Moore (Agricultural) electorate.
