About Light Pass
Light Pass is a small historic settlement in the renowned Barossa Valley wine region of South Australia, located just 3 kilometres east of Nuriootpa and administered by Barossa Council. With a population of 256 across roughly 9.5 square kilometres, it is one of the Barossa's most intimate communities, surrounded by the region's celebrated vineyards on the valley flats. The settlement was named by early landowner Charles Flaxman in honour of Colonel William Light, founder of Adelaide.
Light Pass retains a distinctly historic character, featuring two Lutheran churches — Immanuel Lutheran Church and Strait Gate Lutheran Church — along with a public primary school. The heritage attraction Luhrs Cottage, one of the oldest surviving structures in the Barossa, is a tiny mud-and-straw building that housed the first Lutheran school teacher in the area. Residents enjoy easy access to the amenities of Nuriootpa just minutes away, as well as the many wineries, cellar doors, and gourmet food experiences that define life in the Barossa Valley.
Light Pass falls under postcode 5355 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Schubert electorate.
