About Lilliput
Lilliput is a rural locality in north-east Victoria, situated approximately 7 kilometres south of Rutherglen within the Rural City of Wangaratta. With a 2021 census population of 84 residents across nearly 82 square kilometres, Lilliput occupies gently undulating country in one of Australia's most celebrated wine-producing regions. The locality takes its name from the pastoral run established here in 1845 by partners including James Gullifer, with the whimsical association with Swift's fictional kingdom of smallness apparently inspiring the name.
Lilliput is closely associated with viticulture, lying within the Rutherglen wine region — one of Australia's oldest wine districts — famous for its Muscat, Topaque, and full-bodied red table wines. Lilliput Wines of Rutherglen operates from the locality, tending an organic vineyard planted with cabernet sauvignon, merlot, shiraz, viognier, and petit verdot on land that was part of the original Lilliput Run. The broader area offers scenic vineyard landscapes, and residents have easy access to Rutherglen's wine trails, historic main street, and community services, while Wodonga and Albury provide regional shopping and healthcare a short drive to the north-east.
Lilliput falls under postcode 3682 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ovens Valley (Northern Victoria) electorate.
