About Limmen
Limmen is a vast remote locality in the Northern Territory, covering an extraordinary 14,961 km² of the Gulf Country between Katherine and Borroloola. The area encompasses part of the Limmen National Park — the NT's largest national park — and surrounding pastoral leases. With a 2021 Census population of 203 (predominantly male, reflecting a workforce skew), the locality is extremely sparsely populated. The locality takes its name from the Limmen Bight, a large embayment on the Gulf of Carpentaria into which the Limmen Bight River flows.
Limmen is renowned among four-wheel-drive adventurers and fishing enthusiasts, with Limmen National Park offering spectacular sandstone gorge country, ancient Aboriginal rock art sites, and world-class barramundi fishing in the Limmen Bight River and its tributaries. The Savannah Way — a major outback touring route — passes through the region, connecting Cairns to Broome via the Gulf Country. Facilities are extremely limited, with the remote township of Borroloola the nearest service centre approximately 70 km east. The area is significant to the Mara, Yanyuwa, and Garrwa Aboriginal communities.
Limmen falls under postcode 852 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Katherine electorate.
