About Lockhart River
Lockhart River is a remote Aboriginal community on the eastern coastline of Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, situated approximately 800 kilometres north of Cairns. Covering a vast area of over 3,500 square kilometres, it lies within the Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire Council and is one of the most geographically isolated communities in Australia. With a population of around 640 residents, the community is predominantly Aboriginal — the home of the Kuuku I'yu (Northern Kaanju) and Umpila peoples.
Lockhart River is internationally recognised for its vibrant art scene, particularly the celebrated Lockhart River Art Centre and the Lockhart River Art Gang, whose distinctive works draw collectors and gallery visitors from around the world. The community is surrounded by the pristine rainforests, rivers, and coastline of Iron Range National Park — a globally significant biodiversity hotspot. Access is by light aircraft from Cairns or via a long dirt road during the dry season, making Lockhart River one of Australia's most remote yet culturally rich communities.
Lockhart River falls under postcode 4892 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
