About Lockyer
Lockyer is a small rural locality in the Lockyer Valley Region of South East Queensland, situated on the Lockyer Creek floodplain approximately 80 kilometres west of Brisbane and between the towns of Gatton and Toowoomba. The locality covers nearly 18 square kilometres and, according to the 2021 Census, is home to 89 residents. It falls under the Lockyer Valley Regional Council and sits within one of Australia's most fertile agricultural regions, often dubbed the 'Salad Bowl of South East Queensland' for the diversity and scale of its fruit and vegetable production.
The area is predominantly agricultural, with intensive market gardening, cropping, and grazing enterprises making up the rural landscape. Lockyer was historically served by a railway station on Queensland's Main Line, though the station has since closed; the station building was relocated to Murphys Creek. The nearby town of Gatton (approximately 10 kilometres east) serves as the primary service centre, offering supermarkets, schools, medical facilities, and the University of Queensland's Gatton campus, which draws students and agricultural researchers to the broader region.
Lockyer falls under postcode 4344 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lockyer electorate.
