About Macumba
Macumba is a vast, extremely remote outback locality in the Far North region of South Australia, situated approximately 40 kilometres north-east of Oodnadatta. Covering an extraordinary 22,695 square kilometres of arid desert landscape, it is dominated by the iconic Macumba Station - at 11,063 square kilometres, the third-largest pastoral station in South Australia. The region was formerly owned by pastoral giant S. Kidman and Co. and is now managed by Australian Outback Beef.
The area lies within the traditional country of the Arabana people and forms part of the remote Oodnadatta Track corridor, a celebrated 4WD adventure route through the outback. The landscape is stark and beautiful, with gibber plains, dry riverbeds, and an extraordinary sense of isolation. There are virtually no permanent residents outside the station workforce, and access is via unsealed roads requiring self-sufficiency and proper outback preparedness.
Macumba falls under postcode 5734 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Stuart electorate.
