About Oodnadatta
Oodnadatta is one of Australia's most remote outback towns, located 873 kilometres north of Adelaide and 181 kilometres north-west of Coober Pedy in the Far North region of South Australia. With just 102 residents recorded in the 2021 census, it is a tiny but historically significant settlement in the arid heart of the continent at an elevation of around 112 metres. The town sits on the Pastoral Unincorporated Area and lies along the famous unsealed Oodnadatta Track, a popular tourist route connecting Marree to Marla.
Oodnadatta is best known for the legendary Pink Roadhouse, a brightly painted outback institution that has been a lifeline for travellers and locals since the 1980s, offering fuel, food, accommodation, and local knowledge. The town has deep Aboriginal heritage and historical significance as a former railhead of the old Ghan railway line. Visitors come for the Oodnadatta Track adventure, the remote landscape, and a genuine glimpse of outback life in one of Australia's hottest and driest towns.
Oodnadatta falls under postcode 5734 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Stuart electorate.
