About Mangana
Mangana is a tiny rural locality in north-eastern Tasmania within the Break O Day Council area, situated approximately 8 kilometres north-west of Fingal in the Fingal Valley at the confluence of Richardson Creek and Grant Creek. The 2021 census recorded just 38 residents across 136.8 square kilometres, reflecting its exceptionally remote and sparsely settled character. Mangana holds a significant place in Australian mining history as the site of Tasmania first payable gold discovery in February 1852.
Today Mangana is known primarily to history enthusiasts and rural lifestyle seekers, with remnant gold-mining heritage and the landmark St Joseph Catholic Church — dubbed the Cathedral of the Valley. The surrounding landscape is shaped by alluvial flats, forested hillsides descending from Ben Lomond, and the broader Fingal Valley farming district renowned for potato cultivation and grazing. Fingal (8 km) provides basic services, while Launceston is approximately 90 kilometres to the west for major shopping, healthcare, and transport connections.
Mangana falls under postcode 7214 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (McIntyre) electorate.
