About Maroona
Maroona is a small rural locality in the Ararat Rural City local government area of western Victoria, situated approximately 20 kilometres south of Ararat and around 229 kilometres west of Melbourne. The locality covers a generous 130 square kilometres of pastoral farmland and recorded a 2021 Census population of 80 residents. Its name is thought to derive from an Aboriginal word describing pine-like trees, and the area has long been shaped by its role as an important railway junction in Victoria's freight network.
Maroona is historically significant as the junction where the Gheringhap–Maroona rail line meets the Ararat to Portland freight corridor, with both lines converted to standard gauge in 1995. The surrounding land is used primarily for grazing and broad-acre farming, giving the locality a quiet, agricultural character. Ararat, the nearest service town, provides shops, schools, a hospital, and connections to the Western Highway, while the Grampians National Park lies within easy reach to the west.
Maroona falls under postcode 3377 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
