About Marrabel
Marrabel is a historic township and locality beside the Light River in South Australia's Mid North, approximately 100 kilometres north-west of Adelaide within the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council area. With a population of 101 residents across 82.9 square kilometres, it is a small but storied rural community. The township was laid out in 1859 by local landholder John E. Marrabel, and by the 1860s it had grown to include a hotel, churches, a school, general stores, and a steam flour mill.
Marrabel is best known throughout Australia for its annual rodeo and bull ride, an event held every October since 1935. A life-sized statue of buckjumper Alan Woods riding the famous horse Curio commemorates a legendary 1953 ride and stands as a local landmark. The township sits within the broader Clare Valley wine region, offering proximity to renowned cellar doors, and the surrounding countryside supports grazing and mixed farming. Essential services and larger shopping are accessed in nearby Clare, about 30 kilometres to the north.
Marrabel falls under postcode 5413 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Frome electorate.
