About Saddleworth
Saddleworth is a small historic town in the Mid North region of South Australia, located approximately 103 kilometres north of Adelaide and 12 kilometres south-east of Auburn, within the District Council of Clare and Gilbert Valleys. Situated along the Gilbert River and bisected by the Barrier Highway, Saddleworth forms part of the Gilbert Valley alongside neighbouring towns of Riverton, Rhynie, and Tarlee. The locality covers around 105 square kilometres, and with a population of 483 at the 2021 Census, it retains the character of a traditional South Australian country town.
Saddleworth was established as one of many settlements along the historic road to Burra and features a main street of heritage architecture including the iconic former Bee & Hill store. The surrounding Clare Valley wine region brings visitors to the area, and the town is within easy reach of Clare and Auburn for shops, schools, and services. The Barrier Highway makes it accessible as a stopping point between Adelaide and the Outback, and the fertile Gilbert Valley landscapes appeal to those who appreciate rural South Australia's pastoral heritage.
Saddleworth falls under postcode 5413 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Frome electorate.
