Mathoura is a small town in the Riverina region of southern New South Wales, within the Murray River Council area. With a population of approximately 1,002 at the 2021 census, it is situated 32 kilometres from Deniliquin, 42 kilometres from Echuca (Victoria), and 790 kilometres from Sydney. Established in 1860, the town's name is believed to derive from a Yorta Yorta word meaning 'windy', and it sits at an elevation of 107 metres on the edge of the Barmah-Millewa Forest.

Mathoura is known as the gateway to the Barmah-Millewa Forest, the largest river red gum forest in the world and a Ramsar-listed wetland. The town offers a classic country Australian lifestyle with a pub, general store, sports oval, and a strong community spirit. Fishing, camping, and birdwatching in the surrounding forest and along the Murray River draw visitors year-round.
