About Booroorban

Booroorban is a tiny rural locality in the Riverina region of New South Wales, located on the Cobb Highway between Hay and Deniliquin, approximately 769 kilometres south-west of Sydney. Covering a vast 1,294 square kilometres of flat pastoral country, the locality had a population of just 33 people at the 2016 census, making it one of the most sparsely populated localities in New South Wales. It sits on the Old Man Plain between the Murrumbidgee River and Billabong Creek, and has been a grazing area since the 1850s.

Booroorban is quintessential outback New South Wales — vast sheep and cattle stations, wide open skies, and a strong pastoral heritage define this locality. The village itself is tiny, with a small community hall and limited local facilities. Residents rely on Hay (approximately 52 km north) and Deniliquin (approximately 75 km south) for schooling, medical services, and shopping. The Cobb Highway and surrounding creek systems are central to daily life and agricultural operations.

Booroorban falls under postcode 2710 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray electorate.
