About Coree
Coree is a small rural community in the central Riverina region of New South Wales, situated approximately 43 kilometres west of Jerilderie and 48 kilometres east of Conargo, within the Murrumbidgee Council local government area. With a population of just 91 at the 2006 Census, Coree is one of the Riverina's quieter localities, set amid the flat, open plains that characterise this part of south-western New South Wales. The name Coree is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word possibly meaning 'charcoal'.
Coree has a quiet farming heritage, with its post office operating from 1875 until 1892 — a small reminder of the settlement activity that once made the Riverina an important pastoral frontier. The community is surrounded by broad agricultural land used for dryland cropping and grazing, and the local football club competed in the Southern Riverina Football Association from 1916 to 1932. Today, Coree retains its rural tranquillity, with residents travelling to Jerilderie, Deniliquin, or Finley for most services and amenities.
Coree falls under postcode 2710 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray electorate.
