About Conargo
Conargo is a small rural town in the Riverina region of New South Wales, located within the Edward River Council local government area. Situated on Billabong Creek, a tributary of the Edward River, the township lies roughly 45 kilometres north of Deniliquin and approximately 676 kilometres south-west of Sydney. The locality covers a vast 850 square kilometres of flat sheep and cattle grazing country typical of the southern Riverina plains, with a population of around 117 residents.
Conargo is well known in the Riverina for the Conargo Pub, a beloved bush institution celebrated within Australian ute muster culture and popular with travellers crossing the southern Riverina. The township has a strong pastoral heritage, with the surrounding floodplains supporting merino wool and beef cattle enterprises. Deniliquin and Jerilderie are the nearest service towns, where residents access schools, shopping, and healthcare. The Aboriginal name for the area, Gooriara, meaning "kangaroo ground", reflects the deep Indigenous history of this country.
Conargo falls under postcode 2710 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray electorate.
