About Merryburn
Merryburn is a small rural locality in the Cassowary Coast Region of tropical North Queensland, situated approximately 7.8 kilometres north-east of Tully and about 141 kilometres south of Cairns. Covering just under 4 square kilometres, it is a compact community of 189 residents (2021 Census) set in the lush, wet tropical hinterland between Tully and Mission Beach. The locality falls under the Cassowary Coast Regional Council and sits within the federal Division of Kennedy.
The Tully-Mission Beach Road runs through Merryburn, connecting it to Tully to the west and East Feluga and Mission Beach to the east. Mount Mackay National Park is visible on the locality's eastern horizon, and the surrounding landscape is defined by sugarcane farms, dense tropical vegetation, and the high rainfall characteristic of the Cassowary Coast. Tully provides the nearest schools, shops, and services including a pharmacy and supermarket, and is one of Australia's wettest towns — giving the entire region a richly green, tropical character.
Merryburn falls under postcode 4854 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hinchinbrook electorate.
