About Minnamurra
Minnamurra is a small coastal village in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, located approximately 6 kilometres north of Kiama and 117 kilometres south of Sydney, within the Municipality of Kiama. With a population of around 804 residents, the village is named after the Minnamurra River — an Aboriginal word meaning 'plenty of fish' — which flows through the area before meeting the ocean at a scenic beach and sand spit. The village is located at sea level and covers a compact area of approximately 1.66 square kilometres along the Illawarra coastline.
Minnamurra's lifestyle revolves around its natural assets: the river mouth beach, calm inlet waters ideal for kayaking and fishing, and the nearby Minnamurra Rainforest at Budderoo National Park, which draws tens of thousands of visitors each year. The village has a quiet, established community of owner-occupiers — many of whom are retirees or sea-changers seeking coastal tranquillity within commuting distance of Wollongong and Sydney. A train station on the NSW TrainLink South Coast Line, opened in 1891, provides rail access to Wollongong and Sydney for those who commute. The Kiama Coastal Walk and surrounding surf beaches add to the area's enduring appeal.
Minnamurra falls under postcode 2533 and is governed by Municipality of Kiama Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Kiama electorate.
