About Moltema
Moltema is a small rural locality in the Meander Valley Council area of north-west Tasmania, situated approximately 39 kilometres south-east of Devonport. With a population of around 89 residents, Moltema occupies 23 square kilometres of rolling agricultural land and light bushland in the Meander Valley region. The locality's name is believed to derive from an Aboriginal Tasmanian word meaning 'to run', with the area formerly known as Whitefoord Hills before being renamed in 1915. The Bass Highway skirts the eastern boundary, and the historic Western Rail Line passes through the locality.
Moltema offers a quintessentially Tasmanian rural lifestyle, characterised by small farms, grazing properties and the peace of the Meander Valley countryside. Residents are largely self-sufficient and rely on nearby Elizabeth Town and Deloraine for essential services and shopping. The surrounding region is known for its rich agricultural heritage, cool-climate orchards, and proximity to the Great Western Tiers. Community life is centred around the farming calendar and local events in the broader Meander Valley area.
Moltema falls under postcode 7304 and is governed by Meander Valley Council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Montgomery) electorate.
