About Monteith
Monteith is a small rural locality on the eastern bank of the Murray River in South Australia, approximately 80 kilometres south-east of Adelaide within the Rural City of Murray Bridge. The locality covers nearly 20 square kilometres of flat farmland along the river and recorded a population of 104 at the 2021 Census. The area is characterised by a mix of irrigated dairy farmland along the river flats and drier pastoral land on higher ground.
The dominant industry in Monteith is dairy farming, with many properties being long, narrow allotments stretching from irrigated river flats to elevated country along Bells Road. The Princes Highway traverses the locality and the Adelaide–Melbourne railway line forms part of its boundary, providing a direct road connection to Murray Bridge just a few minutes’ drive to the north. The nearby town of Murray Bridge offers all essential services including shopping, schools, health care, and recreation facilities.
Monteith falls under postcode 5253 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hammond electorate.
