About Morgan
Morgan is a small historic town on the right bank of the Murray River in South Australia's Riverland region, approximately 161 kilometres north-east of Adelaide within the Mid Murray Council area. Established as a railway terminus and river port in 1878, Morgan was once one of the busiest ports in South Australia, with wool and goods from the Murray-Darling river system transferred here to rail for transport to Adelaide. Today the locality spans a wide area of approximately 172 square kilometres and supports a small settled community.
Morgan retains a collection of heritage-listed buildings from its Victorian-era heyday, including the original railway station precinct along Railway Terrace, which stand as reminders of its significant role in Australia's inland trade history. The Murray River provides recreational opportunities for fishing, boating, and camping, and the town attracts visitors interested in river scenery and colonial history. Morgan is a quiet, car-dependent community well-suited to those seeking a relaxed rural lifestyle in the Riverland, within about two hours of the Barossa Valley wine region.
Morgan falls under postcode 5320 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Frome electorate.
