About Morinish South

Morinish South is a sparsely populated rural locality in the Rockhampton Region of Central Queensland, situated approximately 63 kilometres west of Rockhampton CBD in the rugged hinterland country west of the Fitzroy River basin. Covering almost 368 square kilometres of grazing and scrub land, the locality had a population of just 13 at the 2021 census. The area lies in the general vicinity of the historic Morinish goldfields, which saw gold discovered in the 1860s. It falls within the federal electorate of Flynn and the Queensland state electorate of Mirani.

Morinish South is remote cattle-grazing country with no local services or facilities. Residents rely entirely on Rockhampton (approximately 70–80 minutes by car) for all everyday needs including groceries, schools, medical services and retail. The Capricorn Highway connects the broader western district to Rockhampton, though Morinish South itself is accessed via unsealed station roads. The landscape is characterised by dry eucalypt woodland, rocky ranges and open cattle country typical of Central Queensland's inland hinterland.

Morinish South falls under postcode 4702 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Rockhampton electorate.
