About Mount Franklin
Mount Franklin is a tiny rural locality in the Macedon Ranges of central Victoria, situated approximately 75 kilometres north-west of Melbourne on the slopes of an extinct volcanic crater. Covering around 17 square kilometres, the area is dominated by the Mount Franklin Reserve — a distinctive crater feature that forms part of the Hepburn Regional Park and Wombat State Forest. With a 2021 Census population of just 99 residents, it is one of Victoria's smallest named localities.
The area is beloved by bushwalkers, nature lovers, and day-trippers who visit to explore the volcanic crater, wildflower reserves, and dense eucalypt forest. Mount Franklin Estate winery and Chocolate Mill are notable local attractions in the surrounding area. The nearest service town is Daylesford, approximately 10 kilometres to the north-west, which offers cafes, accommodation, and a renowned spa and wellness scene. The broader Macedon Ranges region draws visitors year-round for its cool-climate gardens, wineries, and scenic drives.
